I find this post on making a Tennessee Volunteers Diaper cake very fitting after what happened in Knoxville, TN on Saturday. If you don’t already know, Tennessee beat Alabama for the first time in 15 years. Go Big Orange!

Where did the idea of a Vols themed diaper cake come from?

Anyways, I have a good family friend who is having a baby in a few weeks and I was asked to make a diaper cake for the shower. The theme was the Vols and I couldn’t wait to get started! … If you can’t tell… I’m a huge fan!

Where did I get my supplies?

I knew exactly where I was going to start: Alumni Hall in Knoxville. They had all of the decorations I could choose from!

I purchased:

  • The cake topper: the football.
  • The bib
  • Toddler size socks
  • 2 Buttons
  • 1 Set of shoe laces
  • 1 Power T pin

Hobby Lobby was my next stop. They had the white little rubber bands that are holding the diapers in their cylindrical form, the football & orange fabric paint, the orange & white ribbon, and the wooden dowel rod that is holding the tiers together.

Lastly, the size 2 diapers came from Costco.

Here are a few ideas from Amazon: Cooking & Accessories.

The Steps to make a Diaper Cake

From there here are the steps I followed:

  1. Roll as many diapers as you think you will need. I ended up needing about half of a 174 count box to make 4 tiers.
  2. Once you have one rolled, place a white rubber band around the top and bottom of the cylinder form. This will keep the shape better than if you just put one on each diaper.
  3. Repeat this process until you think you have enough… you can always make more.
  4. To make each layer, I started by using 3 rubber bands and connecting 3 diapers together for the center.
  5. Then I cut a huge piece of string, and I placed it around the outside of the center – without tying it.
  6. Place another diaper on the outside of the center but inside the string and keep increasing the string around the diapers until you have your bottom tier. This helps keep the diapers in place as you are increasing the size of the tier.
  7. Once you have the amount of diapers you would like, tie the string as tight as possible and cut any remaining ends.
  8. Go back and fill any remaining gaps to sturdy the tier even further.
  9. Repeat this process but make smaller tiers as you go.
  10. Once you have your tiers, use the dowel rod and place it in the center of the base tier.
  11. Take your smaller tiers, and place them on top of each other to form the cake.
  12. Time to decorate! Use whatever you would like to decorate the cake and you are finished!
  13. BONUS step: Wrap the rest of the diapers you didn’t use and give them as a present too!
