Backstory

Recently, I got to be a hostess for my cousin’s (Aaron + Tedi) wedding shower. The theme chosen was greenery and white. Simple, timeless, and absolutely beautiful!

My Contribution to the Party

The part of the shower that I was in charge of was the decorations. So, I got to thinking… How could I incorporate my present with the decorations? Then it hit me, a towel cake!

Towel Cake Supplies + Stores

So, I went on a shopping spree. Here is a list of the materials that I purchased.

  1. Costco:
    1. 12 hand towels pack
    2. 5 bath towels pack
    3. 24 washcloths pack
  2. Hobby Lobby wedding aisle:
    1. Eucalyptus stems
    2. Greenery stems
    3. Brown spiral stems
    4. White pearl stems
    5. Feather-like cream stems
    6. Twine
    7. 1 wooden dowel rod

How to Assemble the Towel Cake

Here is a list of step-by-step directions of how I created the different cakes.

Step 1

Re-fold the towels to all be folded the same way. See photos below.

Step 2

Keep in mind that whatever size you are using for the tier you are working on, you must stay with that size (hand towel, washcloth, or bath towel).

Step 3

Start by rolling one of the towels, then add more towels, while rolling, to bring it to the desired tier size.

Roll the towel to make the inside of the tier.

Step 4

Once you have the desired size, use the twine to tie a band around the tier. Pull as tight as you can. Inevitably it will loosen – that is okay, you just don’t want too much.

Step 5

Do this for every tier.

Step 6

Mix and match the different tiers to create different styles and heights you want.

Step 7

Once you decide, cut the dowel rod just a bit smaller than the height of the cake.

Step 8

Pull the middle of the tier enough to allow the tier to drop down over the dowel rod. This is for stability purposes.

Step 9

Use the twine that is around each tier as a base or a guide to placing the stems where you want.

Step 10

Voila, you are finished!

Finished Product

Here are 2 different examples and one picture of all of the ones that I made using the amount of towels I had.

What did it look like at the wedding shower?

So, why would you want to make a towel cake?

  1. Wedding shower – use the towels from the registry in a fun and exciting way.
  2. Decoration for the wedding shower – maybe if you are throwing the shower – it can be your present and a decoration at the same time.
  3. Can always reuse the stems for a different purpose.
