I don’t know about you, but have you ever had a quote just stick with you? Well, I have. It is one that has resonated with me for most of my life – “Walk with kings, but be able hold the hands of the common man.” Here is the story of how I learned of the inspiring quote and how it has changed my life for the better.

Background

When I was in 8th grade, I was picked as a “middle school scholar”. This meant I took 2 people to a special, fancy dinner and got recognized for having good grades.

While my parents and I were there, a keynote speaker gave a speech. I don’t remember much about the speech; however, since my dad was there, he does. I am thankful that he remembers it and reminds me when I am in need of hearing it.

The Inspiring Quote

The keynote speaker said something to the effect of: “Walk with kings, but be able hold the hands of the common man.” Back then, that didn’t mean too much to me, but as I have grown older, it has greater meaning and become more inspirational.

I grew up with humble beginnings. In a sense, I was the “common man” – I wasn’t a “king” by any means.

But as I became an adult, I had the opportunity to work with several “kings” or, what I would consider, important people in math, computer science, and education, as well as, in upper-class neighborhoods/schools.

What I want now

Experiencing both sides of the spectrum has given me a unique perspective on how I want to live my life. I strive to be a “king” but I need to remember where I came from.
