Introduction

1. Sphero Activity

If you have a Sphero and want to do a really cool activity for Pi Day, this one is it. This assignment allows them to be introduced to pi while also learning a bit of block coding.

Students will run the program provided (make sure you have the sound turned on.) Then they will change the circumference to see if how it affects the program.

After that, the students will use a calculator and the sensory data to calculate pi. They will experiment changing the circumference to see if it affects pi.

2. Finch Robot Activity

So there is a strange coincidence between my name and the next robot activity. The robot is called a Finch Robot and it is the 2.0 version. You will also need some printer paper.

This activity makes a great Pi Day Activity and it is something that I think they might like. Students should replace the cap in the middle with a marker. These ones are my favorite: Crayola Paint Brush Markers.

Once the robot is turned on and paired to a device have the students try and draw the letter PI on the paper.

3. Dilation Project

Students will choose 1 of 18 different pictures of pi/pie for Pi Day and they will dilate them to a scale of 1:2.54. The small one will be 1 centimeter squares and the dilated image has 1 inch squares.

4. Graphing a Pi Symbol

If you don’t have enough time to take a day to celebrate, this is a good resource to give students after a test. It will help you celebrate Pi Day but also keep the room quiet while others are finishing their tests.

Students will plot the points in order, connecting them as they go, to draw the letter pi/pi symbol.
